PUTTING HISTORY TO HIP-HOP

NYU junior Joshua Xavier got up from his black chair at the edge of the stage and walked to a microphone in the center.

“I have a dream,” Xavier started, reciting Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous speech, “that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed. We hold these truths to be self-evident — that all men are created equal.”

“I have a dream.”

The packed crowd at the Skirball Center for Performing Arts cheered throughout and burst into applause on his final words.
