ABOUT THE PEOPLE SPEAK
Drawn from Howard Zinn and Anthony Arnove's book, Voices of a People's History of the United States — the primary source companion volume to Zinn's acclaimed A People's History of the United States — THE PEOPLE SPEAK LIVE brings to life the extraordinary history of ordinary people who built the movements that helped bring about whatever freedom and democracy we have today in the United States, ending slavery and Jim Crow, protesting war and the genocide of Native Americans, creating unions and the eight hour work day, advancing women's rights and gay liberation, and struggling to right wrongs of the day.
Since 2004, Voices has staged more than 80 such live performances in 18 different states and in the United Kingdom. Readers have included Academy Award winners and community organizers, teachers and students, veterans and musicians. Stages range from classrooms and town halls to the Sundance Film Festival and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
In December 2009, the History Channel premiered a documentary feature film inspired by these live readings and narrated by Howard Zinn. The film THE PEOPLE SPEAK is executive produced by Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, Anthony Arnove, Chris Moore and Howard Zinn and features original performances by Josh Brolin, Don Cheadle, Matt Damon, Rosario Dawson, Bob Dylan, Morgan Freeman, John Legend, Viggo Mortensen, Bruce Springsteen, Marisa Tomei, Kerry Washington, and many other celebrated artists of our day.
The Los Angeles Times called THE PEOPLE SPEAK "striking, exhilarating...the performances are thrilling" and the Boston Globe said: "The documentary... works beautifully. Each passionate reading flows out of the previous one."
The performance takes place in Potomac Ballroom 2-5 at the Gaylord Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland as part of the 23rd Annual National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in Higher Education (NCORE 2010).
